Cars, an investment for the future

Investing in cars has become a valuable asset to people’s portfolios, being a non-depreciating asset it has seen a huge rise in the collection of vehicles of all makes and values, what seems cheap now could one day be worth a pretty penny.

Have you ever looked back through the cars of your youth and thought to yourself, ‘I wish I’d kept that car’? We certainly have; a series one RS turbo, Mark 1 Golf GTI and Renault 5 GT Turbo come to mind. For example, the series one RS Turbo was purchased for a grand price of £1000 and is now worth upwards of £15000. Quite the investment, had we thought ahead, that would definitely have been one to put into storage for a few years.

In this sense, some cars (not all!) are like wine. They are worth leaving in a safe place for a few years to mature and increase in value.

There are plenty of cars around today that are available for little money that could heed huge gains if stored and preserved correctly.

The following cars to look out for, that are available at the moment and predicted to become collector’s items in the future include;

Renault Megane RS Trophy R, set to become a real collector’s item in future years, also the lightweight Megane R26-R these cars have always held their money incredibly well and will be worth investing in for the future.

Porsche GT2 RS, if you can get hold of one, these cars are set to rapidly increase in value over the next few years, people were selling their spots on the waiting lists and making huge capital gains before even taking delivery of their cars.

Anything in the Ford RS range, from Cosworths to RS turbos all seeing steady rises in values.

Lotus Elise S1 is starting to rise in value and stand as a strong investment for the future.

BMW M3s, most of the range is rising slowly in value, and a well looked after example of the latest run could be a solid investment for the future. The classic E30 and E36 shapes are also always on the rise financially.

Ultimately investing in a vehicle is down to personal choice, above all else preventative maintenance on your asset is essential to its retail value,  running your vehicle up to temperature and exercising its components, having it stored in a fully climate controlled environment with the perfect humidity levels will all help to keep your vehicle in optimum condition and maximise return of investment.
